Core banking on Kubernetes

- A Québec cooperative bank

Progressively breaking down a monolithic core banking system into containerized services while ensuring business continuity for hundreds of thousands of members.
Context
This cooperative bank’s information system relies on a core banking platform built more than twenty years ago and hosted on aging proprietary infrastructure. Every regulatory or business change requires lengthy development cycles and overnight maintenance windows that take a toll on the member experience.
The technology leadership team has launched a multi-year modernization plan to accelerate the delivery of new digital services, reduce dependence on a single vendor, and prepare for hybrid operations, in line with the expectations of the Autorité des marchés financiers and the obligations of Québec’s Law 25.
The challenge
The core challenge is to modernize without disruption: transactions must remain available around the clock, and every migration must be reversible without any data loss. The tight coupling between the monolith’s modules also rules out a “big bang” approach.
On top of this come stringent requirements for security, traceability, and data residency in Canada, along with the need to upskill internal teams accustomed to a traditional operating model.
